I recently wrote about the subject -- in particular, the mistaken belief by most users of FFmpeg that no license is required from MPEG LA (the consortium that licenses the video standard H.264). Make no mistake -- MPEG LA, and other patent holders, absolutely consider non-licensed use of open source codecs infringe on their patents.
